CHAPTER SIX
“I’m so sorry Mike. My brothers can be so…” Tears stung the back of my eyelids as I curled into the couch. It was bad enough that my brothers were rude to me, but to be rude to Mike—they didn’t even know him. Why couldn’t they be nice for a change?
“Hey, baby,” Mike said soothingly as he lightly rubbed my back. “It’s not your fault.”
I leaned into my shifter man. In the past, sometimes I had felt so alone in the world, but I hadn’t had that feeling since we had come together. He made me feel so loved and protected, I could almost block out my brother’s nastiness. Almost.
“My dad should be home soon, but we can go if you want?”
Mike shook his head. “I’m fine with waiting,” Mike grinned. “There’s something I want to ask your dad.”
“What’s that?” What could Mike possibly want to ask my dad? Suddenly, a thought hit me, and I could feel myself growing warm.
Mike’s eyes held mine for a long beat. “I’m going to ask him for permission to marry you.”
“Oh my God!” I squealed. Mike and I had talked about marriage, and we both knew it was going to happen. But I loved that he wanted my dad to be a part of everything. Of course he didn’t need my dad’s permission, yet I found it sweet and old-fashioned that he would want my dad’s approval.
“I love you, Blair…every part of you.”
“Oh Mike! I love you so much.” As Mike leaned in to kiss me, my heart pounded with happiness. As we pulled away, I could hear the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. Far off in the distance, I could faintly hear the sound of police sirens.
“Dad must be here!” I cried, leaping to my feet with excitement. I couldn’t wait for Mike to ask my dad for my hand in marriage. I knew my father would be thrilled. “Come on, Mike.” I grabbed his hand and we rushed towards the front door to greet my father.
“Blair! How’s my girl?” Dad asked cheerfully as we opened the door just as he was twisting the knob. For a guy that was working a lot of extra hours, he certainly seemed to be in good spirits.
“We stopped by to surprise you. Dad this is Mike, Mike this is my father, Rob.
After the two men shook hands we walked into the living room.
“We bought a couple of pizzas and some red wine from your favorite restaurant,” I said, pointing to the cardboard pie boxes. “Can I get you a slice?”
“Yeah, I’m starving. I forgot to take a lunch…I worked late and it took extra time to get past that traffic accident up the street.”
“What happened?” Mike asked.
“Well, I couldn’t see it too well, but by the looks of things someone must have been speeding and slammed into a tree.”
“I hope it wasn’t one of the neighbors?” I grimaced.
“No, it wasn’t a car from around here that I recognize. It was a red sports car.
